Dr Prajakta Karkare (Praj) — restorative dentist, clinician-researcher and future specialist trainee in Periodontics.

I am a Sydney-based dentist working across the North Shore, with a Master of Clinical Dentistry in Restorative Dentistry from Newcastle University, United Kingdom. I have now been accepted into the University of Sydney's three-year Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Periodontics) specialist training program, 2027–2030, alongside advanced periodontal education through the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston and additional postgraduate education through the UCL Eastman Dental Institute, London.

My long-term clinical goal is to work at the perio–prosthodontic interface. With a strong postgraduate foundation in restorative dentistry, I approach complex treatment planning by considering periodontal diagnosis and stability, tooth prognosis, soft-tissue architecture, restorative margins, occlusion, prosthodontic goals and long-term maintenance as parts of the same problem. This supports more comprehensive treatment planning in which periodontal health is considered from the outset — before definitive restorative or prosthodontic care is undertaken.

My developing clinical interests include implant treatment planning, peri-implant tissue health, periodontal regeneration, soft-tissue management and approaches to bone regeneration. My aim is to integrate these periodontal principles with restorative and prosthodontic planning so that complex tooth- and implant-supported rehabilitation is considered from both a biological and restorative perspective.

Alongside clinical dentistry, I maintain a strong interest in research, academic writing and evidence-based clinical systems. My research interests span public oral health, periodontal diagnosis, AI in recall and risk communication, and clinical decision-making at the periodontal–restorative interface, with published and current academic work spanning the Australian Dental Journal, British Dental Journal Team, Frontiers in Dental Medicine and the Journal of the American Dental Association. Current research work continues to focus on making periodontal–restorative decision-making clearer, more measurable and clinically useful.
